AU urged to step up action over Ethiopia's Tigray tensions

Human Rights Watch has urged the African Union to intensify engagement as tensions rise between Ethiopia's federal government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front.

Both sides have accused each other of military mobilisation, while disputes over contested territories, the return of displaced people and disarmament continue to strain the Pretoria peace agreement.

The organisation called for stronger AU monitoring of the deal and renewed diplomatic engagement aimed at preventing another major escalation in northern Ethiopia.
